About American Gothic

American Gothic is a caricature of 19th century Americana, notably in the MidwestMany interpret the painting to be a satire or criticism of rural American life, however, Grant Wood simply drew inspiration from a cottage designed in the Gothic Revival style, providing both the background and the title for the work. From there, Wood drew who he thought would live in that house, with figures modeled after his sister and dentist. Contrary to popular belief, American Gothic portrays a farmer and his daughter, not a husband and wife. It is revered as an iconic example of early 20th century modern art.
